What Is the Best Dry Docking System for 6m Boats?

Boston Whaler In A Seapen

If you own a 6m boat, choosing the right dry docking system is one of the most important decisions for protecting your vessel, reducing maintenance, and making boating easier.

The most common question we hear is:

Should I choose modular floating docks like FloatBricks, or should I invest in a SeaPen?

The answer usually comes down to one thing:

Weight Matters More Than Length

While 6 metres is often the starting point, the real deciding factor is usually your boat’s weight.

As boats get bigger and heavier, they become significantly harder to manually dock, reverse off, and manoeuvre on modular floating dock systems like FloatBricks or other floating brick platforms.

At DockPro, we generally say that once your vessel reaches around 1.5 to 1.8 tonnes, that’s where we start drawing the line.

For anything 6m or over, our first recommendation is usually a SeaPen.

Why?

Because the heavier the boat, the more important easy docking becomes.

The SeaPen is specifically designed for vessels from 6 to 20 metres, making it ideal for larger recreational boats, RIBs, wake boats, pontoons, and light commercial vessels (DockPro).

Why FloatBricks Work Best for Smaller Boats

FloatBricks are an excellent solution for:

  • Jet skis
  • PWCs
  • Tinnies
  • Smaller runabouts
  • Lightweight trailer boats

They’re simple, modular, and highly effective for smaller craft where drive-on access is easy and hull weight is manageable.

For smaller vessels, they’re often the most practical and cost-effective option.

In fact, DockPro specifically positions FloatBricks as ideal for jet skis and small vessels, rather than larger boats (DockPro).

The Problem with Modular Floating Bricks on Heavier Boats

As boats move into the 6m+ category, several challenges start to appear:

Harder to Reverse Off

Heavier boats require more effort and precision to launch smoothly.

Reversing off modular docks can become difficult, especially in wind, current, or tighter marina spaces. If the boat is heavy enough it actually becomes stuck.

More Difficult to Dock Alone

Lining up a heavier vessel onto modular bricks can be stressful—especially for solo boaters.

This is where “fear of docking” becomes very real.

Increased Risk of Hull Pressure Points

Larger boats place more pressure on support points, making correct setup critical.

This is why system selection becomes far more important as vessel size increases.

Why We Recommend SeaPen First for 6m+ Boats

The SeaPen is a true water-level dry dock.

Instead of driving your boat up onto rollers, you simply:

  1. Open the rear gate with a remote
  2. Drive straight in
  3. Close the gate
  4. Let the automatic pump system remove the water

That means:

  • No lifting
  • No difficult reversing
  • No trailer-style launch stress
  • No antifouling required
  • Easier solo docking

DockPro describes it best:

“It’s as easy as parking your car in the garage.” (DockPro)

The SeaPen also acts like a “boat catcher,” helping guide the vessel in safely—something many owners value more than they expect.

SeaPen vs FloatBricks for 6m Boats

Feature FloatBricks SeaPen
Best for Small, lightweight vessels Boats 6m+
Ideal weight range Under ~1.5T 1.5T+
Docking ease Moderate Very easy
Solo docking Can be difficult Excellent
Antifouling reduction Partial Full dry docking
Hull access Limited Full perimeter access
Long-term convenience Good Excellent

Our Honest Recommendation

We sell both systems—so our advice is always based on what genuinely works best for your boat.

If your vessel is:

Under 1.5 tonnes

FloatBricks may be the perfect fit.

Over 1.5–1.7 tonnes

We almost always recommend the SeaPen first.

Because once boating becomes difficult to dock, it becomes a lot less enjoyable.

And boating should always be easy.

Final Thoughts

The best dry docking system for a 6m boat isn’t about choosing the cheapest option.

It’s about choosing the system that makes you use your boat more.

For smaller, lighter boats, modular floating docks like FloatBricks are fantastic.

But for heavier boats—especially over that 1.5–1.7 tonne mark—the SeaPen usually becomes the smarter long-term investment.

Less stress.

Less maintenance.

More boating.That’s the real goal.
