Queensland’s coastline is a boater’s paradise, offering some of the best boating destinations Queensland families can enjoy perfect for adventure, relaxation and fun. If you’ve just joined the boating community, or you’re looking for new spots to explore with the kids, you’re in for a treat!
Since our head office and factory are located right here in Queensland, we figured it appropriate to share some of our staff’s favourite places to visit boating. These are local gems, easily reachable by boat, that promise unforgettable memories for the whole family
1. Moreton Island (Brisbane) – Top Family-Friendly Boating Destination
Just a short trip from Brisbane, Moreton Island is an absolute gem and a must-visit for any boating family. It’s the world’s third-largest sand island, offering crystal-clear waters, vibrant marine life, and plenty of sheltered anchorage spots.
- Why it’s family-friendly: The famous Tangalooma Wrecks are a snorkeler’s dream, with diverse fish species visible even from the boat. The protected western side offers calm waters perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking. You can also explore the huge sand dunes for some thrilling tobogganing!
- Boating tip: Anchor in the protected waters near the wrecks or at designated mooring areas. Keep an eye on tide times, as sand flats can appear quickly.
- For the more adventurous: For experienced boaters and snorkelers, Flinders Reef is a must see! Located a few kilometers offshore of the island’s north-east point, it’s a magnificent protected marine park teeming with incredible coral formations and diverse fish species, offering a truly spectacular underwater experience. However, it can be extremely rough out here, so ensure you have checked all weather forecasts and have all appropriate safety gear before heading out.
2. South Stradbroke Island (Gold Coast)
A stone’s throw from the bustling Gold Coast, South Stradbroke Island offers a natural escape with stunning beaches and calm, protected creeks on its western side. It’s a fantastic spot for a day trip or an overnight stay.
- Why it’s family-friendly: The Broadwater side of South Straddie boasts several calm inlets like Tipplers Passage or Couran Cove, ideal for safe swimming and setting up a beach picnic. The island is also home to wallabies and other wildlife, adding to the adventure. Access to resort facilities is available at Couran Cove.
- Boating tip: The channels in the Broadwater are well-marked, but always navigate with caution, especially at low tide. Ensure your boat’s hull is protected by having good quality fenders when docking or anchoring near other vessels.
3. Peel Island (Brisbane / Moreton Bay)
Nestled in the heart of Moreton Bay, Peel Island (Teerk Roo Ra National Park) is a relatively small, undeveloped island offering pristine conditions and a fascinating history. It’s perfect for families seeking tranquility and natural beauty.
- Why it’s family-friendly: Its most famous feature is Horseshoe Bay, a beautifully sheltered bay with shallow, calm waters, making it ideal for young swimmers. The island is also known for its accessible fringing reefs, perfect for a snorkel, and the fascinating historic lazaret ruins.
- Boating tip: Horseshoe Bay offers good anchorage. Be mindful of marine park zones and protect your boat with proper docking solutions even when anchoring in calm bays to prevent accidental bumps.
4. Noosa River (Sunshine Coast)
While not an island, the Noosa River system provides an incredibly diverse and family-friendly boating experience, winding through stunning natural landscapes and past charming riverside towns.
- Why it’s family-friendly: The river offers endless opportunities for all kinds of water activities in safe, current-free environments: tubing, wakeboarding (in designated zones), fishing, or simply cruising. You can explore hidden coves, pull up to riverside cafes, or even venture up to the stunning Everglades.
- Boating tip: The Noosa River has speed limits in various zones. Be aware of other users, including kayaks and paddleboarders. Maintaining a clean hull is easier in freshwater, but ensuring your boat’s protection at busy jetties is still key.
5. Great Keppel Island (Capricorn Coast)
For families venturing further north, Great Keppel Island near Yeppoon is a tropical paradise with 17 pristine beaches and fantastic snorkelling opportunities straight off the beach.
- Why it’s family-friendly: The island’s sheltered bays, like Putney Beach or Shelving Beach, offer calm waters perfect for swimming and building sandcastles. The clear waters and abundant marine life make for incredible snorkelling, even for beginners. There are also walking tracks to explore and various water sports hire options.
- Boating tip: Most of the popular anchorages are on the western side, offering protection from prevailing winds. Consider the benefits of a dry-docking system at your home base to keep your boat in top condition for these longer trips, reducing marine growth and making launching a breeze.
